Men’s Grass Dance

At most powwows, grass dancers will be called upon to enter the arena first to bless the dance arena and flatten or tamp the grassy dance area with their moccasins for the rest of the powwow participants.

In addition to beautiful beaded moccasins, cuffs, headbands harnesses and belts and porcupine roaches, Men’s Grass Dance regalia contains long strands of yarn or ribbon, hanging from their arms and waist to represent grass in the spirit world. Their graceful dance flows like the rippling prairie grasses.

The steps and movement are carried out in time with the drum and are unique to each dancer.
